Thursday, 22 March 2012 - ( Ogadentoday Press)- Ethiopia and rebels in the restive Ogaden region , Ogaden National Front and Ethiopian troops clashed in Ogaden Region at Godey Zone, according to a source.
The source said, ONLF troops have attacked Ethiopian Military Base near Godey, a town in Ogaden Region on Thursday. Ogadentoday Press Reporter based in Kenya had contacted a close source to the Region and confirmed the attack.
The source said, Ethiopian Military members including the Liyu Police wounded and were taken to Godey Military Hospital while the fighting killed 11 on both sides.
Liyu Police are pro-government forces under the command of Ethiopian Military officers in the Region, and accused of human right abuses, but the Ethiopian Somali Ogaden Region Administration rejects the accusation.
There are no any comments from the Ethiopian Government, the Somali Regional Administration and Ogaden National Liberation Front officials.
Conflict, Human Right Abuses and the Oil.
The ONLF has been fighting for self-determination for the Ogaden since the 1994.
In 2007, ONLF attacked a Chinese-owned exploration facility, killing 65 Ethiopians and nine Chinese workers. That attack prompted the Addis Ababa government to intensify its anti-insurgency campaign in the region.
Ethiopia has been accused of killing, looting and raping civilian in attempt to punish the support of ONLF.
The Ogaden has since been largely off limits to foreigners and some experts says it is the Gaza of Ethiopia. The International Committee of the Red Cross was expelled from the region by the Ethiopian government in 2008 after being accused of providing aid to the rebels.
Last year, Two Swedish journalists were detained in Ogaden Region after they entered the region the pair remain in jail and sentenced for 11 years prison.
The Ogaden Basin that may hold significant reserves of crude oil and natural gas . The basin covers an area of some 350,000 square kilometers (135,000 square miles) it is believed that it has hydrocarbon-rich basins similarly to that of Middle East.
