Ethiopia: The Emir of Qatar’s Visit to Ethiopia 11 April 11, 2013
A high-level of delegation led by the Emir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, and Prime Minister, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, arrived yesterday (April 10) for a two-day official visit. Upon arrival, the delegation was received by Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, Dr. Tedros Adhanom and other ministers.
The high level delegation held discussions with Prime Minister Hailemariam, Ministers and high level officials of the Ethiopian government. The discussions focused on bilateral relation of the two countries and regional matters. Prime Minister Hailemariam on the occasion noted that the Emir’s visit to Ethiopia will fundamentally change the bilateral relations between the two states and have a positive impact on trade, investment and other interactions.
Speaking about the potential for economic cooperation between two countries he said” Qatar has major financial resources and the capacity to invest outside its borders; Ethiopia has major natural and human resource endowments “and underlined that working in the economic areas will benefit the two countries. He added” Ethiopia offers outstanding business opportunities in many areas including agriculture, manufacturing, construction, mining and mineral exploration as well as other areas ” and expressed his hopes that the economic agreement ,which was signed after the discussions will further enhance cooperation.
Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani expressed Qatar’s desire to invest in Ethiopia in various sectors and indicated the potential for Qatar’s to finance Ethiopia’s infrastructure projects. The two sides exchanged views on ways Qatar can engage in Sugar investment, mining and agricultural investment. Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani also expressed Qatar’s desire to have Ethiopian skilled labour force.
He said “we want Ethiopian doctors, engineers, hoteliers to come and work in Qatar’. With regard to agricultural investment, Qatar’s biggest investment company, Hassad Foods representative said ” his company is considering a business plan sent by Ethiopia’s Ministry of Agriculture in the areas of horticulture and floriculture.” The two sides exchanged views on peace and security matters of the region and came in to understanding in the importance of working together to consolidate the relative peace and stability of the region. In relation to Somalia, the two sides underscored the importance of ensuring Somalia’s state building process a “Somali-owned process” and making it an all inclusive process.
