"Gather not my soul with sinners." {#Ps26:9}

Fear made David pray thus, forsomething whispered, "Perhaps, after all, thou mayst be gathered withthe wicked." That fear, although marred by unbelief, springs, in themain, from holy anxiety, arising from the recollection of past sin. Eventhe pardoned man will enquire, "What if at the end my sins should beremembered, and I should be left out of the catalogue of the saved?" Herecollects his present unfruitfulness—so little grace, so little love,so little holiness, and looking forward to the future, he considers hisweakness and the many temptations which beset him, and he fears that hemay fall, and become a prey to the enemy. A sense of sin and presentevil, and his prevailing corruptions, compel him to pray, in fear andtrembling, "Gather not my soul with sinners." Reader, if you have prayedthis prayer, and if your character be rightly described in the Psalmfrom which it is taken, you need not be afraid that you shall begathered with sinners. Have you the two virtues which David had—theoutward walking in integrity, and the inward trusting in the Lord? Areyou resting upon Christ’s sacrifice, and can you compass the altar ofGod with humble hope? If so, rest assured, with the wicked you nevershall be gathered, for that calamity is impossible. The gathering at thejudgment is like to like. "Gather ye together first the tares, and bindthem in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn." If,then, thou art like God’s people, thou shalt be with God’s people. Youcannot be gathered with the wicked, for you are too dearly bought.Redeemed by the blood of Christ, you are his for ever, and where he is,there must his people be. You are loved too much to be cast away withreprobates. Shall one dear to Christ perish? Impossible! Hell cannothold thee! Heaven claims thee! Trust in thy Surety and fear not!

Psalm 26

New International Version (NIV)

Psalm 26

Of David.

1 Vindicate me, LORD,
for I have led a blameless life;
I have trusted in the LORD
and have not faltered.
2 Test me, LORD, and try me,
examine my heart and my mind;
3 for I have always been mindful of your unfailing love
and have lived in reliance on your faithfulness.

4 I do not sit with the deceitful,
nor do I associate with hypocrites.
5 I abhor the assembly of evildoers
and refuse to sit with the wicked.
6 I wash my hands in innocence,
and go about your altar, LORD,
7 proclaiming aloud your praise
and telling of all your wonderful deeds.

8 LORD, I love the house where you live,
the place where your glory dwells.
9 Do not take away my soul along with sinners,
my life with those who are bloodthirsty,
10 in whose hands are wicked schemes,
whose right hands are full of bribes.
11 I lead a blameless life;
deliver me and be merciful to me.

12 My feet stand on level ground;
in the great congregation I will praise the LORD.

Psalm 26

Amplified Bible (AMP)

Psalm 26

[A Psalm] of David.
1VINDICATE ME, O Lord, for I have walked in my integrity; I have [expectantly] trusted in, leaned on, and relied on the Lord without wavering and I shall not slide.

2Examine me, O Lord, and prove me; test my heart and my mind.

3For Your loving-kindness is before my eyes, and I have walked in Your truth [faithfully].

4I do not sit with false persons, nor fellowship with pretenders;

5I hate the company of evildoers and will not sit with the wicked.

6I will wash my hands in innocence, and go about Your altar, O Lord,

7That I may make the voice of thanksgiving heard and may tell of all Your wondrous works.

8Lord, I love the habitation of Your house, and the place where Your glory dwells.

9Gather me not with sinners and sweep me not away [with them], nor my life with bloodthirsty men,

10In whose hands is wickedness, and their right hands are full of bribes.

11But as for me, I will walk in my integrity; redeem me and be merciful and gracious to me.

12My foot stands on an even place; in the congregations will I bless the Lord.

Psalm 26

Contemporary English Version (CEV)

Psalm 26

(By David.)
The Prayer of an Innocent Person
1Show that I am right, LORD!

I stay true to myself,

and I have trusted you

without doubting.

2Test my thoughts and find out

what I am like.

3I never forget your kindness,

and I am always faithful

to you. a>]" class="footnote">[a]4I don't spend my time

with worthless liars

5or go with evil crowds.

6I wash my hands, LORD,

to show my innocence,

and I worship at your altar,

7while gratefully singing

about your wonders.

8I love the temple

where you live,

and where

your glory shines.

9Don't sweep me away,

as you do sinners.

Don't punish me with death

as you do those people

who are brutal

10or full of meanness

or who bribe others.

11I stay true to myself.

Be kind and rescue me.

12Now I stand on solid ground!

And when your people meet,

I will praise you, LORD.
