The main purpose to explain the mask has always to be transmission. Given the vaccine limits the likeli-hood you will die it does nothing for transmission hence the mask! As for you question as to whether the mask will protect you. It actually will give you a great deal of protection if you are wearing the correnct mask. The Goverments of most countries downplayed this because there was such a shortage of N95 Masks in the market.
Wearing a cotton or the cheap surgical style masks do little for your protection. Even today hospitals and doctors offices, labs etc are wearing the cheap surgical type mask as it stops transmission and their is a limited supply of N95. My wife is a nurse in a nursing home. They currently wear the cheap surgical type masks until they go into break out once cases occurr in the hope the employees are all issure N95 for protection. Sort of stupid if you ask me you are reacting after the chickens are out.
I personally have a large supply of both KN95, PP3 and PP2 masks. I typically wear a PP2 which is 99% protection vs 95%. That said, they are the ear loop type so what I do is add a behind the head elastic or adapter and they add staple to the woven area of band attachment so it reaches a strong seal. These are proven for self protection and are 6-10 times more effective than the typical surgical mask!
