Natural Gas Prices Rise

09:38 AM EDT, 08/26/2022 (MT Newswires) -- Benchmark natural gas moved higher early on Friday even as long-term forecasts cooled and a day-prior report showed inventories rose more than expected last week.

Gas for September delivery was last seen up US$0.14 to US$9.52 per million British thermal units.

The rise comes even after the Energy Information Administration on Thursday reported inventories stored for winter use rose by 60-billion cubic feet last week, ahead of expectations for a rise of aroud 58 bcf. The rise left inventories 12% under the five-year average.

The price of the fuel pushed above the US$9.00 mark this week in sympathy with record European prices, as Russia continues to withhold gas supplies to the continent, even as the Freeport LNG export plant said repairs following a June fire will keep it closed longer than expected, continuing to free two-billion cubic feet of gas per day for the domestic market.

Long-term forecasts from the National Weather Service see temperatures running at or below seasonal averages for the next six to 10 days, easing demand for electricity to power air conditioners.
