Globe says EXFO, others generate strong short interest

The Globe and Mail attempts to identify stocks that short sellers are circling in its Tuesday, June 17, edition. The Globe's Tim Shufelt writes in the Number Cruncher column that after years spent in the wilderness, shorts have returned to the market with renewed pessimistic conviction. The bull market, now in its sixth year, has been ruthless to short sellers, who have struggled to find sinking boats in a rising tide. Defensive bets, however, have surged of late, with bears sending short interest in the SPDR exchange-traded fund tracking the S&P 500 to a level not seen since 2012. Mr. Shufelt screened for stocks listed on Canadian exchanges with the greatest short interest. Mr. Shufelt looked for stocks with deteriorating sentiment, so short interest had to have increased over the past month. Mr. Shufelt excluded stocks with a market capitalization of less than $100-million. Stock with strong short interest are EXFO, ATS Automation Tooling Systems, Algoma Central, Kingsway Financial Services, Leon's Furniture, Great Canadian Gaming, Glacier Media and Rocky Mountain Dealerships. Mr. Shufelt says these stocks could prove a good starting point for investors looking to run with the bears
