RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:Avigilon Blue, a New Subscription-based Cloud ServiceOld dude. I have no knowledge of 8k security cams.  Right now, all the high mega pixel cams are limited due to bandwidth.  I LOVE the idea, but the truth is, it is hardly ever utilized to its intended potential.    Cameras are used for two purposes. Live viewing and post incident.  99.99999999% of cams I see are looking at doors and hallways. All of which, 2-3MP is more than ample.  99.99999 of cameras are are for post incident.    Analytics are when actually used!!!!!! Are great

So, if you want to monitor an event live, you can use the high end fixed cams with analytics to draw your attention to something and then use pan tilt zoom (PTZ) cams.  If looking at a stadium etc, I would prefer large angle cams and PTZ to quickly zero in and track people.  Analytics are fantastic and I love them.  Los Vegas shooting is a perfect example, good t mega pixel cams covering general area and a number of very powerful PTZ with a lens that can see and record a face from 2k feet. PTZ can be swiveled 360 degrees.

non gov network security Folks are often even less savvy than gov  profit and very low respect for security in private sector is sadly the norm.  It’s not uncommon to see heads of security departments only being paid 50K

often, it is these people who oversee the purchasing, commissioning and maintenance of security systems being deployed in large cities with hundreds of cameras. I once told a client, that unless he was willing to spend 250k a year,he could forget all about anything coming near a security pro. Of course his salary was only 125 and he was general manager for a large city,  so one can expect that recommendation to go nowhere. He asked and I gave him the truth.

so, securing private on premise systems is a feat, few can handle properly. They leave admin passwords in place, permit the guard just off the boat to shoulder serf the installers passwords, give the guard full admin rights. Then you have that 125k general manager and 50k security manager to permit guards and staff to surf porn or go to gambling site, and some other very nasty sites. They don’t really say, it’s ok, but they seldom ever do anything about it or pay independent folks such as me to perform random audits.  I know, I have done it. Catch employees doing the above and they are not fired!   So hooking up security systems to the internet is a huge potential for a back door to ones corporate network.   What I have typically done when required, is to put the systems on a closed network.  They screw up and get hacked etc, it is limited to that system.  So, in short, due to low paid, low supervision of staff, low level knowledge of security AND those installing the systems, it is not a wise move to put a system on a corp network. If you do, you better have one heck of a system in place and be performing audits on people and sites everywhere in the world on a weekly basis.   I had a really, really bad dude ( security guard I might add) reach into server cabinet so he could plug into network and go on some jihadi sites!!!!!!   We got him of course but that was due to a tip off and not by the security manager in charge! So, in security, nothing is ever secure. The less you expose yourself to WELL known mistakes waiting to happen, the better

being on line is a necessity, but you better know what you are doing and never let up on your efforts.  I know physical, personnel and some level of cyber.  Knowing the first two, and a smidgen of cyber, tells me that really need to think twice.  The other issue is that physical and cyber seldom talk.  The silo principle is still very much alive and well in security.   I try and bridge the gaps when I can but I just cross my fingers when I leave them, because I know it’s an accident waiting to happen.  I can go on and list a wide range of very common examples but have probably already bored most here.

avo, good cams and people.  Stay away from being associated with cyber failures sticking to your name.  Let the cyber folks and physical security folks take the hit when they are hacked
