On a little more serious note.......

It is certainly nice to see all these large block trades and significant accumulations happening, no doubt. It is even beginning to make ME wonder if something of scale might be in the works. I guess it's just human nature to "wonder" about the what ifs. While I don't have visions of granduer here just yet, it is very curious I'll admit. Not entirely sure this size and number of entities get this wrong.................at least I sure hope not. At the risk of being a downer, there is a flip side to this as well and that is, the serving up of the nothing burger or close to it. What happens to all these positions. As Bunny states, maybe they are just making prudent investments here but something tells me its a bit beyond that, guess time will tell. If we do get close to the nothing burger, perhaps it will be all of us "needing more Tide" if these positions get unwound! Now that's not a pleasant thought!

Watch the preferred shares.  IF there are serious signs that a buyout is in the works, the prefs should firm up.  In a buyout scenario, the prefs will be redeemed at par.  40% + upside from current levels.

Good point. To re-iterate, personally I remain skeptical of a "wholesale" deal here although never say never. I was also thinking, should even something of scale be in the works or happening, I should think we will see an inevitable pop. Not just hold our own but about a 6-10 percenter at minimum. Hmmm, now I'm starting to speculate, better just real those thoughts back into reality.

WIshful thinking.  In the last couple takeovers that I have been involved in, the company doing the takeover retains a shell of the company it has taken over as a subsidiary and keeps the preferred shares intact.  Or they at least threaten to do so, then they offer to convert the old preferreds into new preferreds with the same or similar terms.  Depending on the financial strength ...more

Agree wholeheartadly. Nice insight on the prefs as well. I think we are in the same camp on the current state of Artis and looking forward. Just seems unlikely here. The right thing to do always seems the hardest to swallow.

Got any names of those takeovers? Canadian Rules are much different than those in the U.S. Some buyouts that come to mind: RONA:  Lowes offered approx $20 but shareholders rejected.  Eventually went thru @ $24. Brookfield Office Properties:  now a subsidiary of Brookfield; company had to provide multiple cross guaranties in order to avoid onerous reporting regulations. Atlantic ...more
