RE:One more thing: Lumias aren't getting carrier supportYasch22 wrote: Another point of connection between BB10 and the similar path Lumias are travelling.
BB10 suffered very seriously from the lack of carrier support, especially in Europe and North America. in countries where it was able to maintain that support -- as in Indonesia and South Africa -- BB10 continued to do surprisingly well.
Despite the earliy reviews and excellent specs for the Lumia 950, carrier support is going to be a big issue. Not one of the major carriers in Canada plans to sell it, and only ATT in the US plans to carry it. The issue? These guys look at their sales records, see that previous versions of high-end Lumias sold very poorly, and decide it isn't worth their while to (a) book the new 950 devices into their system, (b) spend time & energy dealing with MSFT reps, and (c) spend time and money on promoting the devices. Conversely, MSFT avoids the expense of having to modify their devices to suit the other three main American carriers, producing just the one custom-fitted device for ATT.
So, MSFT is doing exactly what BB did. They're building up online sales channels, hoping to generate sales of unlocked devices that bypass reliance on carriers. My gut feeling on this, all in all, is that MSFT will have about the same amount of success in selling the Lumia 950 that BB had in selling its high-end BB10s.
