Then again, Tesla has been uniquely "autonomous" from the get-go. Musk started off as a code-writer himself, and as we all know his first great success came from writing for the company that became PayPal (which needs A-1 security). After a few years at Tesla, starting in 2003, Musk had already assembled a world-class team of engineers, both mechanical and software. That is, it was driven by engineering creativity, not by big shots from MBA and PR schools.

Simply, Musk has known all this time about the importance of security for software-defined cars, as well as knowing how important sw in general would be. On top of that he's been absolutely ferocious about vertical integration. A big part of that means that he wants every layer of the sw stack to come from Tesla's own team of engineers. These guys even designed and built their own silicon chips for autonomous driving as well as for its new robot. They abandoned Nvidia in the process.

Other OEMs are literally forced to go with QNX and other sw providers because they kept their heads shoved up their wazoos until it was too late to take a different route. A lot of them even skrewed around for a few years trying to find cheaper alternatives to QNX. You could see that they were treating sw as something they could buy off the shelf, and as an area where they could win their little bean-countng games.
