Bombardier Flight Test Vehicle #3 (FTV3) that was scheduled to be handed to Bombardier Flight Test Center team (BFTC) in mid-January has now been delivered yesterday to BFTC as a prelude to its first flight.
FTV3 is the third so-called “Flight Test Vehicle” of the CSeries aircraft built by Bombardier, for testing and certification by Transport Canada.
Before CSeries FTV3 first flight is allowed, Bombardier needs to get the necessary flight permit from Transport Canada. Also, engine testing and high speed taxi/runway test are necessary. FTV3 flight authorization is expected to be delivered any day now by Transport Canada. Officials from this government department are on site to perform this task. A permit is necessary for high speed taxi tests.
If we use FTV2 as an example, FTV3 high speed taxi tests might be done within two days. Engines test in about 3 days, all this weather depending. I would add up another week for other contingencies (Am I the only one who does this?)
As an essential part of the initial testing the manoeuvers consist in moving the aircraft around the airport on its own power, to specific areas where high power engine tests can be performed. The aircraft holding bays used for that purpose, at Montréal-Mirabel Airport (CYMX/YMX), are located at the end of both runway (06/24 and 11/29). Generally the areas closer to the Bombardier facility are used whenever possible, i.e. holding bay 24 and 06.
