Experienced investors can easily see trhough this game but new comers might get influenced to sell their share cheap.
Why would positioning before market opening be called market manipulation ??
This manupilation theory is being thrown around quite easily without much basis.
Just because we don't knwo all that is going on behind the scenes, does not mean it is manipulation...in most cases it just means that the retail investor doesn't have the knowledge or the tools and neither the moneys to afford such tools or such expertise. Just because we don't totally understand doesn't mean its manipulation !
Because I have occasionally done it myself to influence the market by placing a sell order of a few 100Ks shares at 3 or 4 cents below the previous day closing, one can give the impression that there is a lot of shares for sale and that something negative might come out soon. As you will often notice, in most cases, a minute or so before the market opens, a lot of these sale orders are either cancelled or adjusted up. It is an easy way to influence the new comers in selling their shares cheap.
If you plan to buy a few K of shares, who cares. But if you plan to buy 100K of shares it might result in a saving of a few thouzand dollars.
Sometime it works, but in most cases it does not.
After 18 years with Bombardier, I know rather well how this stock reacts and use my experience to make a few bucks.
