Last information i got is that the number of shorts has not changed much. Does it means that shorter are still shorting now with the hope of making a few bucks to recover their losses when they last shorted this stock at around $2.00

That would be pretty stupid. Somewhat equivalent to someone borrowing money against a credit card to pay for another credit card.
