PLATTSBURGH, NEW YORK--Bombardier Transportation today moved
the 1000th R142 rapid transit vehicle off its production line
for delivery to the MTA New York City Transit (NYCT).
Representatives from NYCT, local dignitaries and more than 700
employees at Bombardier Transportation's Plattsburgh
manufacturing facility participated in a commemorative event
marking this major milestone in one of the largest rapid
transit car manufacturing projects ever carried out in North
America.
Bombardier Transportation is building 1,030 R142 cars for
MTA/NYCT based on orders and exercised options valued at $1.9
billion Cdn ($1.3 billion US). The original order for design,
manufacture and delivery of 680 R142 cars was signed in July
1997. Upon completion of the full order, Bombardier
Transportation will have provided, since 1982, a total of
1,855 cars to NYCT or about a third of the New York City
subway fleet.
"The R142 is service-proven technology that significantly
raises the standard for rapid transit vehicles in terms of
comfort, efficiency and performance," said William Spurr,
President, Bombardier Transportation - North America. "We are
proud to be delivering that kind of impact on such a grand
scale to the largest passenger rail system in the United
States."
The R142 cars, which are customized to NYCT specifications,
represent some of the most advanced in-service systems for AC
propulsion and dynamic braking, trucks, friction brakes, doors
and on-board diagnostics, status and communications systems.
The cars also feature advancements in passenger comfort and
safety, such as digital electronic signage, an automatic
public announcement system, an emergency passenger intercom
system connected to the operator, and a sophisticated climate
control system.
Carbody shells for the R142 are constructed at Bombardier
Transportation's La Pocatiere, Quebec manufacturing plant with
final assembly and testing activities taking place at
facilities in Plattsburgh, New York.
