Are funds driven by share price growth or ...

... are they more driven by dividend distributions?

I ask this questions as retail is being replaced more and more with Baytex as price goes up.

It seems funds take out retail regardless of price if they see juicy dividend payouts currently or in the near future.

Maybe I'm presenting a simplistic view.

Does anyone have insight into how funds make investment decisions ... share price or payout potential over an extended period upcoming.

I would expect that funds invest on PV analysis which includes both.

Canukiwi, thanks for the response. I'm not a "sophisiticated" investor in the energy space. I'm a retail guy who has followed Baytex for about 10 years now and traded shares successfully and also held the bag for a long time too. I was bold enough to take a big position during the Covid fallout and now am sitting on massive gains. Once in a lifetime gains for a retail guy like ...more

I no longer have the resources to do PV or any other type of analysis and have probably lost most of the mental capacity to do so. Glad you have done well. GLTAL.

Bulls like Eric spout fundamental research data like cash flow yields and multiples which is a simplified PV analysis. Bears and bashers don't. They rely on fear of oil price collapse, or other macro factors like peace breaking out, EV replacing the entire car fleet, etc , all of which are not impossible, but not an analysis that concludes the stock is overpriced based on any financial ...more

obviusly Eric Nuttall a great place to start but Simply Wall St article recently did a DCF analysis to arrive at a $13+ stock price   Simply Wall St used to contribute to this board I think

Dividends are nice if you want a steady reliable monthly income. Or even quarterly. A little growth in the divy is also nice. That's why investors buy banks and utilities. But not a small or mid cap oil producer. These stocks go up or down the entire annual dividend in a day. Very often. I've had days where bte goes up, or down, by more than I paid for the stock, in one day. That's ...more
