Food for thought

No idea if the math is all correct but definitely eye opening

US deficit going ballistic

Once a countrys debt is larger than its GDP decline of that country has always happened. The US debt to GDP is just below 122%. It was a little above 55% in 2000.

What does a billion mean?

This is too true to be funny .
The next time you hear a politician use the
Word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about whether you want the

'politicians'

spending
YOUR tax money .
A billion is a difficult number to comprehend,
But one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases.

A.
A billion seconds ago it was 1959.

B.
A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive .

C.
A billion hours ago our ancestors were
living in the Stone Age.

D.
A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.

E.
A billion dollars ago was only
8 hours and 20 minutes,
at the rate our government
is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in our brain...
let's take a look at New Orleans ..
It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division.

Louisiana Senator,
Mary Landrieu (D)
was asking Congress for
250 BILLION DOLLARS
To rebuild New Orleans . Interesting number...
What does it mean?

A.
Well .. If you are one of the 484,674 residents of New Orleans
(every man, woman and child)
You each get $516,528

B.
Or... If you have one of the 188,251 homes in
New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787

C.
Or... If you are a family of four...
Your family gets $2,066,012.

Income tax was introduced as a temporary measure to help pay for WW2 , check my math but that was paid off decades ago ......
Comment by Chrisinvan7 on Dec 12, 2022 6:58pm
There's nothing more permanent than a temporary government program..
Comment by dllscwbysfn on Dec 12, 2022 7:34pm
100% agree with this. There simply is no accountability. I am truly amazed that the whole system has not collapsed yet.

You forgot the 25% of the the country's citizens who were destitute. Or don't they matter?
Comment by TheWokeLemming on Dec 12, 2022 10:18pm
Choices matter too.  Most of us work our azzes off to pay the taxes that todays "destitute" get to use for free drugs and housing and now dental.  I'd like to say it makes a difference so I should accept it and feel good about it but then I see the local poor buying their $20 pack of smokes and another $20 on lottery tickets.    We taxpayers provide ...more

Woke, I have appreciated your contributions to the BTE board, but must ask if you are so ignorant of human history that you believe the poor and destitute is always their own fault.
Comment by HighOctane89 on Dec 12, 2022 11:17pm
Let's not get overly sanctimonious Canukiwi , after all we are here to talk stocks not the inequality of life . To be fair , you couldn't be in a better country to either succeed or fail . Canada is free and open , the only organization shaking people down here is the federal government .  On a brighter note WTI is still holding on to earlier gains , crude inventory reports tomorrow ...more

Of course not.  Don't be so over the top dramatic.  Historically it's been far worse for the poor than in modern times as far as Canada is concerned.  And today I recognize that Justinflation is definitely driving some to the poor house.   But don't tell me that Canada's poor doesn't have the opportunity to do better.   Between the social ...more

I agree a lot of what u say. Canada is a great nation and a lot of us have done well for ourselves. By and large, I think that people not doing that well don't always make the right choices and some can't help it. One thing I do know is that the Federal Government is totally out of touch with reality.  All citizens of this great country could have it so much better if we had ...more

Completely agree.   The Federal Liberals have made everyone's lives worse in their 7 years in office, driving up energy costs, debt and inflation.  Everyone that is but their Liberal friends who got paid enormous amounts of money to implement government programs and "initiatives".  It took 2 decades to get over the fiscal mismanagement of Pierre and it'll ...more

Actually in Canada mostly. If you are talking about the immigrants arriving from Europe 100 years ago, not familiar with the language, with only the shirts on their back, then "no" not their fault, but the person who goes broke because he has a meth addiction and can't hold a job? Not the same thing mate.  And let's not forget that our safety nets in Canada are pretty ...more
