Kyrgyz interim leader says govt will help foreignBISHKEK: Interim Kyrgyz leader Roza Otunbayeva said on Friday her government would ensure foreign companies were able to continue working in the ex-Soviet state after a revolt that ousted
the president.
“We will help make sure that all our large investors work without disruptions,” Otunbayeva said at a meeting with executives of foreign firms working in Kyrgyzstan. Analysts say violent unrest has increased uncertainty for foreign investors in Kyrgyzstan’s mining sector, which include London-listed Chaarat Gold Holdings Ltd.
Kyrgyzstan’s economy depends heavily on gold production. The Kumtor mine, run by Canada’s Centerra Gold, accounts for nearly a quarter of its industrial output. South African miner Gold Fields, which is exploring for gold and copper in northwest Kyrgyzstan with London-based Orsu Metals, said on April 13 that villagers had seized a camp housing its geologists. reuters
