Japanese official said the pool, where used nuclear fuel is kept cool, might be boiling.
When the spent fuel will be exposed to air , the risk of a Zirconium fire arises
and then you have a very large release particularly of Cesium 137.

4 down , 2 to go

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said they were closely watching
the remaining two reactors at the plant, 5 and 6, as they had begun overheating

Japan's nuclear safety agency said earlier it suspected
the latest blast may have damaged reactor 2's suppression chamber.
This time part of the reactor itself seems to have been damaged.

Another blast at Unit 4 punched two holes eight metres square in the wall
of an outer building of a reactor, exposing the spent fuel pool to outside air.
Within three hours the amount of radiation at the plant rose to163 times the previously recorded level
, according to Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency

Crew that were tending to the facility and trying to make repairs were evacuated.
They had already punched a hole into the vessel around the second reactor,
so as to reduce the risk of further hydrogen explosions—at the cost of releasing
a greater flow of radioactive particles into the surrounding atmosphere
Japanese officials appeared unable to figure out what was going on deep inside the reactor.
The rods were exposed when the flow of seawater into reactor number 2 stopped simply because a fire pump ran out of fuel.
With the entire region of Honshu island reportedly low on fuel and other vital supplies, a key question is whether plans are in place to keep the power station supplied with diesel.

WHAT THE HYDROGEN EXPLOSIONS MEAN

1.the core could rise up to 2,000C (3,600F)
2.The steel vessel is cladded with zicronium
3.the melting zirconium reacts at these temperatures with water molecules to form hydrogen
4.his makes the cladding more brittle and likely to fall away from the rods.
5.SO, WE ARE LOOKING AT RELEASING FOR LONG TIME,STEADY STREAM OF RADIOACTIVE STEAM AND HYDROGEN
If they will manage to prevent meltdown or major explosion.

IT'S RAINING -reporter on the ground

As we stood talking in the rain, some emergency workers walked by. They spoke animatedly to our translator, Yamaki. Yamaki turned to us and said we needed to get out of the rain. When we asked why, he said "black rain," or, in other words, the threat of radiation from the Fukushima plant being carried and spread through condensation.
We'd been out of cell range for hours. When we got closer to Sendai, our phones started blowing up. It was the question. There's a possibility you are in danger of nuclear radiation. Do you want to stay or do you want to go? The CBS News foreign desk sent us all kinds of assessments on the potential nuclear threat so we could make an educated choice.
None of us have a death wish.
We bundled in the van for the trip to Tokyo

THE LEVELS

Radiation levels in Chiba prefecture, next to Tokyo, were 10 times above
normal levels, Kyodo News reports.
In Ibaraki prefecture, about 70 kilometres south of the nuclear plant,
radiation levels surged to as high as 5,575 nanosieverts at 5:50 a.m.
, the Ibaraki government said in the release Tuesday.
11 TIMES ABOVE LEVEL CONSIDERED HARMFUL
and 110 times normal
That compares with 50 nanosieverts as of 9:30 a.m. on March 13,
when the measurements began, according to the statement.

Radiation readings in Kitaibaraki city, about 43 miles (70 kilometers) south of the Fukushima
nuclear plant was at 821 nanosieverts per hour as of 3 p.m. Tokyo time.
A chest X-ray typically involves a dose of 20 micro-sieverts
At its most intense, the leak released a radioactive dose in one hour at the site 400 times
the amount a person normally receives in a year. Within six hours, that level had dropped dramatically.

A person would have to be exposed to that dose for 10 hours for it to be fatal,
said Jae Moo-sung, a nuclear engineering expert at Seoul's Hanyang University.

Authorities reported radiation levels nine times normal in Tokio
— too small, officials said, to threaten the 39 million people
BUT Austria moved its embassy from Tokyo to Osaka.

Steam that is released into the air will eventually get back into the water
and sea life will be affected ... once there is rain, drinking water
will also be contaminated.”

The French embassy put out a safety alert to its nationals living in Tokyo,
noting that north-easterly winds from the area around Fukushima
could bring low-level radioactive contamination to the capital,
250km away, within 10 hours.

US MILITARY BASES GO FOR COVER

More U.S. military crews were exposed to radiation Tuesday
as they ramped up relief flights over Japan,.
Americans on two military bases at Yokosuka and Naval Air Facility Atsugi .
south of Tokyo were advised to stay indoors limit their outdoor activities
and seal ventilation systems at their homes as much as possible.
THAT's 300 km AWAY !

U.S. Navy said it was redirecting three ships to work in the Sea of Japan
on the country's west coast rather than risk the hazards of radiation
and the debris field in the waters off the east coast.
USS George Washington detected low levels of radioactivity as the carrier sat pier-side at Yokosuka

USS Regan group continue to monitor the winds closely, moving our ships

They are also 200km away when the cloud hit them

The only major route heading south from Fukushima city is jammed with traffic
as an exodus of people try to flee the region.
Most drivers and passengers were wearing masks.

Winds over the nuclear facility were blowing slowly in a southwesterly direction that includes Tokyo
Stores sold out of radios, flashlights, candles and sleeping bags.
Japanese media have became more critical of Kan's handling of the disaster and criticized the government and nuclear plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) for its failure to provide enough information on the incident.

Some 70,000 residents within 20km have already been evacuated,
and the premier urged anyone left in that exclusion zone to leave.

The U.N. nuclear agency said a state of emergency was also declared Sunday at another complex, the Onagawa power plant, after higher-than-permitted levels of radiation were measured there.

"The trade winds will most significantly blow it into the ocean towards the United States."
India orders testing of food originating from Japan for radiation?
South Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Philippines said they would test Japanese food imports for radiation.

Physicians for Social Responsibility Board Member Ira Helfand, MD said in phone-based news conference
A thousand Hiroshima bombs,” he said. “That’s how much radiation is inside a plant.”

Peter Bradford, former member of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission.said:
Only the gravest danger would constitute an evacuation of that nature,by the gov.
Ordering several thousand people into motion so soon after an earthquake and tsunami was something no government would do if they could help it.
The presence of Cesium 137 is also a disturbing piece of information, assuming its verifiable, because it’s clear cut evidence its coming from debris from the reactor itself.

Chernobyl required more than a million emergency workers and clean up workers and the evacuation of more than 180,000 people and rendered an area half the size of New Jersey uninhabitable.

Ken Bergeron, physicist and former Sandia scientist who worked on nuclear reactor accident simulation, said: “It could be worse than Chernobyl. It had a greater release but it was released into the stratosphere far away from populations. Exposure to people was much reduced.
In Japan it will be a slow release due to the molten core melting through the pressure vessel and the containment vessel.
All of that radioactive material is going to be right on the surface of the earth and much more available to expose populations.

Nuclear technology expert Brad McCarthy stated that "exposure from a nuclear meltdown could fall between 100,000 to 1,000,000 mrem which could cause severe radiation sickness to the people in Japan with increasing likelihood of fatality."
Radiation doses of more than 5000 mrem/year are considered unsafe, regardless of source. In the United States, the average person is exposed to an effective dose equivalent of approximately 360 mrem (whole-body exposure) per year from all sources.

Chernobyl clean-up expert slams Japan, IAEA
Greed in the nuclear industry and corporate influence over the U.N. watchdog for atomic energy may doom Japan to a spreading nuclear disaster, one of the men brought in to clean up Chernobyl said on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin ordered checks at all Russian nuclear facilities and a review of plans to develop nuclear energy on Tuesday
Sechin said Gazprom was preparing shipments of liquefied natural gas. "
In addition to LNG, Russian companies are ready to supply Japan with coal and about 6,000 megawatts of electric energy, Sechin said.
, Mechel and SUEK will consider boosting coal supplies by 3 million to 4 million tons, Sechin said.

Two 100,000-metric-ton vessels."with LNG are unloading now .
Another 2 will be diverted from other routes shortly

Even if contracts between Russia and Japan are renegotiated, the profits that Gazprom
might gain from it will be marginal, said Svetlana Grizan, an oil and gas analyst at VTB Capital.

Russia was on the brink of an incident similar to Japan’s current situation in 1993
when the energy supply to the Kola nuclear power plant in northwestern Russia
got cut off because of stormy winds.

KEEPING THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE

1 nuclear disaster every 15 years kills ,say 1- k people ( excluding quake and tsunami)
In Japan ,so far not even 200= the rescue workers who'll get lethal dose.

.In 15 Y, in China mostly , 15-20k people died in coal mines.
Nukes seems, to cost 20 times less lives.,
Not counting long effects of radiation or pollution.
But long term Chernobyl nuclear reactor explosion “has caused more than a million deaths.
