In February 2012, China imported 20.55 million metric tons (tonnes) of coal. Excluding lignite, February 2012 coal imports came in at 17.02 million tonnes, a sequential increase of 4% versus January 2012 imports of 16.4 million tonnes and year-over-year increase of 152% versus February 2011 imports of 6.8 million tonnes. We note that Chinese monthly import figures tend to be distorted by the Chinese New Year, which fell in February in 2011, but January this year. China registered a strong increase in coking coal imports in February. February 2012 coking coal imports came in at 4.65 million tons, a sequential increase of 35% and year-over-year increase of 134%. Mongolia was the largest supplier of coking coals to China in February 2012, followed by Australia. Japanese January 2012 coal imports increased 16.7% sequentially and 7.7% year-over-year, driven by a 24% sequential increase in coking coal imports.
