Why has Trump not announced the following:1. A federal excise tax on medical and rec marijuana in States that allow it; first $5 billion in new taxes goes to building the Great Wall of Trumpy (he wanted Mexico to pay for the wall so take it out of the pockets of the Mexican drug cartel that will no longer be as successful selling illegal ditch weed because of good quality legal medical and recreational products)
2. After the Great Wall of Trumpy is built the federal money earned from legal cannabis sales can go towards education and helping the communities most adversely affected by the War on Drugs.
3. Provide leadership in terms of expuging the records of all those minor possession charges that wrecked so many lives. All he has to do is say that this is going to happen because he is going to reform the worst aspects of the War on Drugs.
4. By doing the above he can take a major campaign promise away from the leading Democrat Presidential contenders and enter the Presidential race showing progress on:
-Funding for his Wall campaign promise and strengthening of border security
-Help for communities most hurt by the unfair practices of the War on Drugs
-Help for veterans to get them off opioids and into better care for their PTSD and other war related conditions
-Support for the overal economy in nurturing a rapidly growing industry that is going to produce trillions of new dollars in the form of wages, ancillory businesses, export markets, etc., etc., etc. (just refer to the stats that show more than 200,000 jobs in the industry and that is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of potential)
-Support for medical research
-What the majority of Americans think should happen
This is not a hard sell at this point. If I was Trump I would do it before summer. I would not want to go into the next election cycle with this being a talking point for Democrats. I would go into the election cycle with a record that shows good progress on international trade deal negotiation, job creation in America and Drug reform supporting the goals of border security and the other benefits mentioned above. Not sure who Trump is taking advice from right now, but I can't think of one other issue that has the ability to increase economic activity and decrease social inequality as much as this one. So I say own the issue and show leadership now because it will also get people talking about real progess instead of the current bickering which should pay dividends at the ballot box in 2020.
