OK here goes - it is a higher risk for a potentially higher reward.  Low volume = diminished liquidity. This presents challenges with fair price discovery and increases the risk of market manipulation.  Low volume stocks are often targetted by short sellers and boiler room chop shops.  Clear as mud?
