Rant Time

It seems the American Economy is booming.  If you place much store in a single jobs report anyway.  But it was enought knock gold down 2% and wipe out all the gains EDV made with incredible results.

And meanwhile in Florida, and many other states, the death count from Covid continues to mount.  Florida has killed off 40,000 so far with Covid-19 ( as comparison Canada has been a little gentler with only 27,000 for the entire country).  And Florida is now killing a 100 a day, and most models suggest the case counts will at least double.  In the USA as a whole cases are now at a 6 month high, and forecast to at least double.  And with the old folk scared and smarter and more vaccinated
, the deaths and sickness is more in younger people.  Another comparison is that on average 10 people die a day in Florida in traffic accidents.  And we all know of the huge money spent and actions taken to prevent traffic deaths.  I mean you kill someone in a car accident while driving drunk and you may as well kiss the rest of your life good bye.  But giving your friend Covid-19, from which he has a certain chance of dying from, and the Florida Gov almost thinks that is a good thing.

I have long since given up predicting the price of gold. These days it seems to totally depend on how many jobs the Americans add.  One thing to remember that in the next month in Florida approx 5,000 people will die from Covid-19, lots of them of working age, so there will be that many less to take a job.  I suppose it is also true that the funeral parlours will be busy, so maybe that will boost the economy some.

Hi Ronnie, "patience" is the watchword, IMO. What we saw yesterday was a kneejerk reaction to a hike in treasury yields, on the back of the jobs report. But what was overlooked was that, from the perspective of gold it's not nominal yields that matter but real yields. With inflation surging, real yields remain negative and around record lows - making it more attractive to hold gold. ...more
