The shorts dont all disappear, they come back when the daily price increase exceeds a gld index by a lot, they buy end of day and have the odds in their favour that the next day will be a regression to the mean. The added possible bonus is the weird 2 billion dollar sales of gold during the night that happens occasionally and that is unpredictable and the price goes down big time ( you never get that on the buy side, you really need good economic data for increases),and at opening the price goes down for ELD, either scenario, not bad odds like 55 % in your favour.
The shorts are never gone, they have statistic models but when their numbers diminish, the 200 day moving average is usually more easily and quickly attained.
