Lorne Steinberg - BNN comment - Don't Buy

DON'T BUY
ENB vs. FTS vs. TRP for income in an RRSP.

Lots of debt, which company has indicated it's going to reduce, which means slower dividend growth over time. Yield is 7.6%.

FTS is less levered. For a pure income play compared to ENB, he'd choose this one.

His favourite play in the entire sector is TRP. Less levered than ENB. Healthy dividend yield, and more room for growth. More room for growth in general.

Well,i don't expect ENB to do much but i am happy with the%7.6 with a tax credit as opposed to Fortis %4.3 I am adding at this level. Because it is x soon, you will get 5 divs in 13 months. GLTA

If you're after tax priviledge dividends the best choices are the preferred shares. TRP.PR.H, TRP.PR.F and TRP.PR.I are yielding 11.3%, 10.8% and 11.2%. There's quite a few ENB prefs yielding around 8%, but can't beat the yield and the safety of TRP's floating prefs.

Due to this tax change the Canadian preferred shares have become a once in a lifetime opportunity for small investors, as the insurance companies, banks, credit unions and other financial companies have reduced and eliminated their holdings. That's why you know have yields of 9.5%-11.5% on FTS.PR.I, EMA.PR.B, TRP.PR.H, F and I. Tax advantaged dividends from investment grade securities. Mana ...more

luscar...I agree Preferred shares are by and large overlooked by most retail investors. In addition to your points, in markets where the outlook is for interest rate cuts, investors in preferreds not only gain from the dividend income but also from capital appreciation in the SP of the preferred (another tax advantaged investment) providing exceptional total returns at very low risk if one buys ...more

Correct. The preferred shares have been caught in the downdraft of... the lemming effect of mass -selling solid fixed income securities when interest rates increase. Simply because they are classified as "fixed income". While that makes some sense for bonds and bond funds yielding 4% when money market and GIC's offer 5%-6%, it becomes absurd to abandon tax advantaged 12% yielding ...more
