You have to pity Tom. He has no friends because he has no ability to be civil or engaging. He was likely brought up by parents that were sorry he was born. If it were not for the internet, where generally we don’t get to choose the company we keep, he'd have no place be 'belong' at all.
We can feel sorry for him and take comfort in that we did not turn out like him.
