Level 2 is a good place to watch it happen. All of us who aren't shorting could put an Ask in for $1 today and it would have no effect on SP. We just don't have the resources nor the time to reverse downward pressure the way the Big Guys can. Going up against huge professional institutions is like a flea crawling up an elephant's derrire with whoopee on its mind. Despite our best intentions we're outgunned individually .The playing field is so unlevel. Reddit showed us what even a ragtag, somewhat organized group can do to one stock but even they don't have the resources to stop unfair practices everywhere. All we can do is trust our DD, hold and not sell.
At least with a penny stock the manipulated dollar increments are in decimals. How many of us would sit at our computers and fractionalized their investments this way, all day @ $X a trade. Not many I would wager. Evidence of a short in progress? I think so. JMO
