Methane emissions.
In Canada landfills emit 700,000 MT of methane per year. Canadian oil and gas operations emit 2.3 million MT of methane per year. The federal government has just set a requirement for the oil industry to reduce methane emissions by 75% by 2030. The Alberta government is already pushing back big time. It will be interesting to see how the oil industry reacts, what they estimate the cost will be and what taxpayer assistance they will demand. A MT of methane from a landfill turned into RNG is a lot better than just collecting and flaring.
