With the great balance sheet they had, why take on another 3+ B in debt?  They could have bought assets from MEG as the company was already distressed and was probably looking at some discount sales. They didn't need the whole package.

Hostile bids are messy and unpredictable and tend to hammer the share price. For energy investors the frustration continues--even with the good companies.

 

MEG is a one trick pony, there is one producing asset. You can only have it all or none.
