Silly question but what size exactly is a position? 5000 units? 10,000? I get the concept of averaging the costing down as fully expect this thing to explode over the next week or two when either China or Greece go off the rails and want to be ready for the spike up. This is way too much complacency given all that's going on in the world with a VIX at 12. Was there a couple weeks ago for the ...more

A position is what ever you want it to be. I usually buy 1000 at a time and either sell or average down (not always the best strategy). If the FED wasn't interfering so much, VIX would be at 16 in a quite period. Not sure why they monkey hammered this down so fast - Greece has a long way to go yet. Did you know Greece handles a lot of the banking for nearby countries? Apparently, they are ...more

what does acb 25/15 o/w mean?
Comment by Contra_Man on Jul 17, 2015 1:29pm
Excellent question Osirus1. Positions are logarithmic trading units we use to pattern either a SELL or BUY of falling knifes typically. Each unit is defined as a exactly one board lot or 100 shares. Small investors could use 1/10th positions and large institutions x00's or x000's if the float allows. Each additional SELL or BUY is then simply one additional board lot, or 100 shares. Thus, ...more

Contra your accuracy and timing are remarkable. What indicators do you use for entry/exit and where didyou acquire your skills? I would love to expand my toolbox but there aren't many sources of info that I trust like yours. Thanks. -TCB

Trust is Earned ... that's my Tat! Skills... what skills?  Pyromania is just a disease.  Being an ex-industry trained investment professional with 30+ yrs experience as Fellow, Swiss Bank Licensed, and Financial Pl, learned quickly that there is no real method of timing anything successfully.   What Contra_Folk buy - or what causes our sell triggers, is often just going ...more

Yup, got to get into the feel. Only through experience watching how markets react to certain things, and the backlashes. That's how I get my stock picks and entry points.

I tried keeping the question on the down low by asking it in the HVI forum that no one uses, but I dont think you noticed it. :p What you wrote confirms a lot of my beliefs (toss math/charts, trade CONTRAry) and trust your gut when the patterns and overbought/oversold show up. I find your logarithmic entries particularly good at capitalizing on falling knives and have modified them a bit to suit ...more

How the heck to you manage to catch the lows? Did you close your BIS position? Holding at $ 26 and still impressed how the smart money keeps buying biotech. Did a small flip for some coffee money, but still holding around 2.9 (I call this current loss my FOMO premium).
Comment by Contra_Man on Aug 06, 2015 11:40am
The Catch really is don't try to Catch the low's or high's... just use same or even increasing amounts if able to be bought lower, over same identical time periods, (ie: daily buys) to dollar cost average over time into a failing storyboard in order to PATIENTLY dollar average a close approximation to new recent lows.  Buy low/sell HIGH can't be done overnight unless you' ...more

I agree that it is almost impossible to catch the highs and the lows. I decided to try trading after I did not act upon oil last summer (even I could see it was over valued and the US was producing too much). I have been bitten trying to time things (shorting China, Russia too soon, holding HOD). My biggest weakness (and probably there are numbers like me) is FOMO. I now know this can be deadly to ...more

FOMO? You need to go into gambling rehab. Seen many get stuck in HVU positions from FOMO. Heard all the doom and gloom prophecies. Was a prophet myself almost 3 years ago with S&P under 1500, and look at where we are now. But rates will affect equities in some way eventually, one has to think. www.problemgambling.ca/help

I can't use the link - I am in Alberta  ;^). Actually, all these markets right now are gambling with the house (the FED and Wall Street) taking the most. When the VIX drops below 13, the odds of something bad happening come into favour for us. After selling HVU too quickly today, I bought a small lot of HVI (which I will probably dump tomorrow). I will have to admit, I was feeling a ...more
