it starts very slowly and it simply 'appears' to stop.

What strikes me is that this is discussed in great detail in the Book of Revelation.
As a junior neophyte novice ‘scholar’ of Book of Revelation, I could conjecture a lot about this.
However, this could be a bit too much for now.
