I'm surprised one of the other banks didn't move prior

Canadian Western Bank is a right-sized acquisition for National. It's not too big to affect the mother ship adversely in any way. It also provides them with new domestic exposure. Be thankful they didn't go after Laurentian. The other banks may have considered it too small to make a difference to their bottom lines, or were too caught-up in the highly profitable duffel bag deposit business.

I am surprised at how stupid the market is.  They have reduced to value of National by more than the value of CWB pre deal by 1.5 billion.  I'd buy CWB for 10 bucks all day long.  I think this deal will be approved as it essentially creates some competition for the big 5.
