It does rain in Nevada and at the mine site, and when it does, is characteristically intense, often generating floods. A tailings facility would be designed for an appropriate storm magnitude, but it is always possible to be overloaded.
What is different, is the surficial geology. The tailings dam at Mt. Polley failed because one section was built on glaciolacustrine clay, which has a low liquid limit and caused structural failure and breach.
There was a tailings breach in Mexico recently that was in an arid environment like Nevada. It can happen, but with proper engineering, it is unlikely.
Good to hear NCU shaft is advancing and now more activities can proceed. The lack of significant water at depth is very good news for the mine development.
