You speak of “the Russians” as if there were such a people. That has never been true as far as historical records exist. Waves of invasion mainly from the East, spread the Slavic culture beyond its former boundary. In more modern times Stalin aligned his Soviet Union with Nazi Germany and attacked Poland. After WWII Russian language was taught in schools throughout the Soviet Union and was required for dealing with the government. The canard of Putin “protecting” Russian-speaking people was a ruse employed by Hitler with his “German-speaking” neighbors.
