Obligation to Alaska?

Obligation to Alaska?Back in 2012 in a debate: The transmission line you talked about from the northwest, I believe that’s so we can tie Alaska to the main power grid? It’s going to cost $400 million to build that power line to supply the mining projects there. Do we have an obligation to supply that power load to Alaska?

Answer: Melissa Holland: The northwest line is just entering into construction. It’s a $500 million project to build a 287 kV line to supply a mine in region. There is an IPP that will connect into the system there. It does not connect to
Alaska and yes, we are obligated to serve that is why we are building it.

Could debate forever here. But who will share the cost. I think BC Hydro would only go to the Alaska border and from there on either Alaska or private enterprise has to fund and build their portion of the transmission line. There is a power line into the Golden Triangle already, to service mining which could be extended.

Biggest beneficiary would be Alaska, as they could attract green/ammonia hydrogen, LNG development, etc. But the best of intentions can go sour.

Trump's approval of the Alberta to Alaska Rail dream back in 2020. The A2A developer filed for creditor protection in 2021. A person living in the Yukon says: As a Yukoner this rail line will never happen.
