New Jersey Residents 'Overwhelmingly' Prefer Natural Gas to (P&GJ) — A recent public opinion survey conducted by Affordable Energy for New Jersey indicates that the majority of New Jersey residents strongly favor natural gas as their preferred energy source for heating homes and powering appliances.
The survey, which polled nearly 1,200 registered New Jersey voters, revealed that 76% view natural gas favorably, with 67% preferring it over electricity.
Furthermore, when asked about the possibility of mandating a transition from natural gas to electric heating in all homes, 61% of respondents expressed opposition to such a requirement.
Ron Morano, Executive Director of Affordable Energy for New Jersey, emphasized the disconnect between policymakers and residents regarding energy preferences. Morano stated, "The results of this opinion survey clearly show that regulators and legislators are out of touch with New Jersey residents' energy preferences. We need sound energy policy that includes reliable, affordable, and realistic choices, not unrealistic and expensive mandates."
Additionally, the survey addressed concerns about potential increases in energy costs associated with transitioning to renewable energy sources. Nearly 80% of respondents indicated opposition to such cost increases.
Residents also voiced opposition to allocating taxpayer funds to impede natural gas pipeline projects, with nearly 60% opposing such expenditures.
Regarding New Jersey's primary energy sources, respondents favored natural gas, solar, and nuclear options, with 22%, 22%, and 21% of respondents respectively choosing these sources. Only 6% expressed a preference for wind energy.
Morano urged policymakers to heed the survey results and prioritize residents' preferences in energy policy decisions. He emphasized the need for the Board of Public Utilities to listen to New Jersey residents before proposing updates to the Energy Master Plan.
