Absolutely outstanding article TX. Ten plus years ago I had a good friend that told me he  was ready to invest in Crystalex (Kyr?) I gave him an emphatic do not touch it. Back then  I had the take on it that the Russians owned it and had stolen the rights. This was so much more entertaining. Inca Kola by the way is more popular then Coke in Peru. It has been bought out by Coke in the last 10 years and is now distributed everywhere in South America.. When I crossed the  by Taxi into Peru from Chile over 20 years ago I found a vending machine and almost spewed my first taste. Horribly sweet and unrecognizably flavored by sweet grass although often  described as tutti ...more

South America has a lot of "quirky" drinks.   Another example is Guyana.  On my last visit to Jonestown, I noticed they had a great fondness for a homegrown flavor of Kool-Aid.   Wasn't bad, but a little "mediciny".  Strange thing though:  It did leave me with a sustained erection that has lasted years.  I have yet to visit a doctor ...more

Stick to SA not Central America and if you want to try a religious try this one very popular on tours by young people. Finda a shaman you trust as you generally become comatose for 4 to 6 hours.
