They serve two purposes:
1. They allow for some professional course credits for health care professionals to satisfy their professional obligations.
2. They are marketing tools for big pharma to promote existing approved therapuetics.
Suggesting that MC and ONC are somehow accessing the eyes and ears of BP by attending this event, is a bit like suggesting that a small tech CEO with a cool idea could establish partnership dialogue with APPLE by going in to an Apple Store.
MC problably has a family/friend wedding in New Orlean's this week and is more than happy to access his $1500 per diem and have his flights paid.... all he needs to do is present for 30 minutes to a group of five or six people.
