Half to 2/3 of the contracts I signed over 30 years were under NDA at least for a short period. Much of the time, it's because the client doesn't want their vendors to be able to exploit their name for PR purposes until much further into the relationship. We could talk about the client in small presentations, for instance, but couldn't do wide releases. Most often though, it's to not tip off competitors, the market, and various prying eyes as to what you're up to. It's also the best way to protect from scrutiny if things go to s#it.
