RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE::-) LKAB had some interesting news this morning..Great DD by @MidtownGuy "Finally, it looks like LKAB's announcement to use hydrogen is downstream. You still have to start with pellets. And even if using biofuel in the pellet process, it still has to be heated. I found a graph:"

LKAB will definitely need torches to burn the cleaner hydrogen ( as you kindly stated over at ceo.ca)
Long and strong PYROGENESIS!

With a new hydrogen-based technology, the state mining and mineral group LKAB will transition from producing iron ore pellets to producing carbon dioxide-free iron fungus. It will be the largest industrial investment in modern times and will be fully implemented to cut carbon dioxide emissions from the company's customers worldwide by 35 million tonnes each year, which corresponds to two thirds of Sweden's territorial emissions of greenhouse gases, while creating thousands of new jobs. Fossil-free Sweden now wants to remove obstacles to this and other major industrial establishments that can consolidate Sweden's role as a permanent world exhibition for fossil-free technology.

Within the framework of the government initiative Fossil-free Sweden, 22 industries have developed roadmaps that show how they can become fossil-free or climate-neutral at the same time as they strengthen their competitiveness. Based on these, Fossil-Free Sweden now wants to highlight and remove obstacles to several future industrial projects that can make the greatest climate benefit globally while at the same time they can contribute to more jobs and increased welfare in Sweden. The most talked about examples so far are the development project Hybrit, where SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall collaborate on a process where steel can be reduced from iron ore using hydrogen instead of coal, and Northvolt which will be Europe's largest battery factory with a focus on sustainability and recycling. Mention may also be made of Preem, which, after backing out of an investment in the expansion of fossil fuels, is now planning to build refineries for biofuels

When carbon dioxide-free iron sponge is exported, LKAB contributes to reducing the emissions of its customers in the Swedish and international steel industry by 35,000,000 tonnes annually. This corresponds to two thirds of Sweden's total territorial emissions of carbon dioxide or three times as much as the emissions from all passenger cars in the country. The industrial project we are now presenting is of an even larger scale. LKAB's new decided strategy may be the largest Swedish industrial investment ever with annual investments of between SEK 10–20 billion over 20 years. The plan is based on a business assessment of the future market. By offering carbon dioxide-free products, LKAB can more than double its turnover by 2045. At the same time, the company can supply the world market with the carbon dioxide-free iron that is necessary when the world economy shifts and tomorrow's railways, wind turbines, electric cars and industrial machines are produced

LKAB's own operations currently cause 4 percent of the industry's total emissions in Sweden. But LKAB is part of a global industry where the value chain from mine to industrial steel makes the iron and steel industry the industry that causes the largest emissions of carbon dioxide. An industry that globally accounts for just over a quarter of the industry's emissions and for 7 percent of the world's total carbon dioxide emissions. When LKAB now begins the biggest change in the company's 130-year history, it means that its own technology and processes for iron and steel production change fundamentally and provide a couple of three thousand new jobs a year in Kiruna and Gllivare during the 20-year construction process

When LKAB now begins the largest change in the company's 130-year history, it means that its own technology and processes for iron and steel production change fundamentally and provide a couple of three thousand new jobs a year in Kiruna and Gllivare during the 20-year construction process. A shift in technology where the really big effects arise as new technology contributes to changing the value chain for iron and steel production globally. The entire Group's production of iron ore pellets will be restructured and replaced by a hydrogen-based process similar to the one currently being developed within Hybrit. The result is a carbon dioxide-free iron fungus. When this is exported, LKAB contributes to reducing the emissions of its customers in the Swedish and international steel industry by 35,000,000 tonnes annually. This corresponds to two thirds of Sweden's total territorial emissions of carbon dioxide or three times as much as the emissions from all passenger cars in the country.

Sweden will thus not only be the first country in the world that can produce fossil-free steel, but also the first country that can export fossil-free iron to the whole world. The restructuring that LKAB and other industries are now initiating is a consequence of the overall innovation pressure that arises when the world has to adapt to limit climate change. Those forces create a need for new thinking, innovation and often also large investments that must be profitable over time. Today's need for profound structural transformations draws strength from a long tradition of interplay between the basic and manufacturing industries that has shaped and contributed to the emergence of the modern welfare state. Today, LKAB collaborates with companies such as SSAB, Vattenfall, Sandvik, ABB, Combitech, Epiroc and a number of other industry leaders to develop the technology that will enable the conversion of fossil-free and autonomous mines.

Carbon dioxide-free production will require extreme amounts of green electricity and access to biofuels at competitive prices and an industrialization of hydrogen production. Fully developed, the new technology for carbon dioxide-free iron sponge requires electricity corresponding to one third of today's total Swedish production. In addition to major investments and technological development, a new and better interplay between business, politics and other good forces on the common goal is also required. The list of issues that need to be resolved is long, but some of the main points are:

1 Efficient, legally secure and fast permit processes so that new and necessary, climate-efficient, investments become possible and are not pushed far into the future. It should be possible to shorten the permit processes to more than half if all stakeholders, including the industry itself, streamline their parts of the process.
2 Investment in research and development and innovation support for the basic industry with a clear focus on fossil-free technology development and hydrogen.
3 Secure the energy issue. Carbon dioxide-free production will require extreme amounts of green electricity and access to biofuels at competitive prices and an industrialization of hydrogen production. Fully developed, the new technology for carbon dioxide-free iron sponge requires electricity corresponding to one third of today's total Swedish production.

Today's regulations are too fragmented and are adapted to a time where changes have taken place gradually and slowly. Despite the fact that both will, resources and technology are in place, the risk is imminent that large and important changes will get caught up in long and cumbersome review processes where rules and laws do not differentiate between local and global effects. In order to succeed with these large and long-term changes, a broad consensus is required in the Riksdag and among society's various actors. The Swedish tradition of broad collaboration provides unique conditions for developing the world's first fossil-free welfare state.
