I would imagine this falls into the "something is better than nothing" scenario. 
Most of those shares he's stuck with and wouldn't be able to sell if he wanted to imo. The market would have a tough time absorbing even a couple of million shares without cutting the share price in half.  There are few buyers and the story isn't improving.  My guess is most of his shares will be worth zero at some point.  Hence pulling out at least something now is better than holding 100% of nothing later.
Either way to me it's pretty disgusting to be adding to the sell side as the stock tanks.  Just my opinion though as an observer without skin in the game so take it for what it's worth.
