2.4 GHz will be a mess in 2-3 yrs anyway
With the onslaught of Bluetooth starting to ramp
up with it's extremely agressive frequency hopping
scheme the 2.4 GHZ band will become a mess.
Wofdm, Vofdm, Wireless Lan, etc will see their
through-puts drop by 60-70% when in close proximity
to a bluetooth piconet. I think the FCC decision is
a good one. In fact it will force 4G suppliers to focus
solely on the "Cleaner" 5.8 GHz bandwidth sooner. So
when their networks are set up they will avoid
dissapointing ed users in a noisy environment.
Also the can take advantage of even higher data rates
at 5.8 GHZ.
Hatim noted about a year ago in a response to
me that they components for a 5.8 GHZ device
are more expensive than those for 2.4 GHz.
Alot has changed in a year, the fact That Wi-Lan
is already developing product in the 5.8 GHZ
band shows that once again they are ahead of the
technology curve (some Hyperlan people are still
having some glitches but you didn't hear it from me)
Now that more OFDM (W,V 802.11) will move to the
5.8 GHz band the components costs will drope even
further due to increased production.
