Quarterhill Inc > cash and working capital what will it be used for

cash and working capital what will it be used for

Cash and cash equivalents and short-term investments were $61.0 million at June 30, 2023, compared to $67.9 million at December 31, 2022. At June 30, 2023, Quarterhill had working capital of $109.5 million. Due to the nature of the Company's business activities, operating cash flows may vary significantly between periods due to changes and timing in working capital balances.

Does anyone think this cash will be used to buy out another company to expand quarterhill bussiness

Or if cash is not used do you think the new board members and ceo would want to sell quarterhill.

Cash drain from 2022 was a big concern

Cash used in continuing operations for the three and six months ended June 30, 2023, was $10.2 million and $18.7 million, compared to $45.1 million and $51.4 million in the comparative prior year periods, respectively.

My concern with previous ceo and old board members after the apple settelment of about $165 million you would have think that money would have been put to use to expand company why did they burn through so much cash at the time if some one know please let me know. Do you think new board and Ceo is aware that all that cash went so fast and going foward we will be leaner operation. How much more money is quarterhill owed roughly from wi-lan sale and when we get final proceeeds i asume we are done with wi-lan no more 10% ownership would this be done by year end

Is there any companies out there that quarterhill can buy

your thoughts will be appricated.

Tsmith, let me try to add perspective to your two questions: Where is the money go; and Will QTRH continue with an acquisition-based growth strategy? First, where did the money go?  There are three easily identified events: $14.6 million charge to settle litigation and arbitration disputes with the former owners of VIZIYA. Payment of contingency award/fees to McKool ...more

Thank you cabbie for your insight no wonder why they sold wi-lan even after apple settlement they had to pay all these fees to lawyers after 10 years of fighting with apple makes you wonder if it was worth it all they at the end of the day ended up with less than 100 million in cash I can see why board sold i this company was costing to much to keep and it seems let's be honest at the end of ...more

I won't engage in an debate with you on Wilan profitability Tsmith. I will say that it was profitable, but in a different, lumpy way. The problem with Wilan was that it offered low growth potential with substantially elevated risk of thanks largely to the America Invents Act and the policies of government, particularly Democrats, towards private property rights...a philosophy still evident in ...more

You are very nice Cabbie! Not sure if Tsmith is here for co info or just poking us with trivial B'S...? He only finds issues never a positive word? Anyways you did a nice recap, thanks for that! hoping for some valuation adjustment....... soon?

He's up to speed imo, so I look forward to positive contributions from him. Time will tell, of course. Reasonably, QTRH needs another data point on profitability before valuation adjustments.

Socrates1 positive word I want this company to succeed let's get that straight. Also when wi-lan settle with apple I was so happy to see that thinking from theere that was going to be the turning point for wi-lan and they would still be part of Quarterhill. What I thought is we would have a multi year licence with apple that would have given us great cash flow not sure why we were not getting ...more

"I wanted wi-lan to get want we were fully owned seems to me there was to much politics involved apple was to big correct me if I am wrong I am sure all of you on this board feel like we got cheated" Too much politics, not sure it  was managements fault like some were ranting about.

I was dissapointed Lagger, but Wilan got what it got.  It was time to move on to be an ITS company.  The QTRH board should have taken rumored offers from 2017, but they thought the offers were too low and that the IP monetization landscape become more favorable to IP owners.  It started to for a brief period under the Trump administration. If you want to lay blame, blame Obama and ...more

Comment by cabbieJBJ on Sep 25, 2023 11:58am
I GUESS YOU DID'T READ THE PRESS RELEASE: QUARTERHILL SOLD WILAN. QTRH should focus on building its ITS businesses and not be concerned with how Wilan is being operated. You do know, don't you Tsmith, that Dr. Michel Fattouche is a QTRH observer on Wilan's BoD.  Dr. Fattouche is still a QTRH insiders and owns almost 2 million shares of QTRH - his interest is that QTRH gets what ...more
