Shorts?

Shorts?I have a question...  I have very little knowledge of shorts.  I did short a stock once but my son, who was a broker at the time, saved me from disaster.  So it's a serious question - not me trying to be smart.

Question:

If a lot of shorts are trying to cover before yearend, as someone suggested, why wouldn't they be glad to buy at .97 five minutes before the closing bell.  I was watching the Level 2 orders at the time and I couldn't see anyone wanting to buy (except for an even lower price) other than the last minute "uptick" buys to finish off at .98?  There didn't seem to be any sense of urgency whatsoever, other than someone wanting the stock to end up at .98.

Anyone willing to straighten out my thinking would be appreciated.
