Absolutely off TopicToday in the US is Martin Luther King Day.
While in Canada, this day in the US may not mean anything of signficance, it actually means a lot to me.
Not to brag...but....
In 1996, I, among about 20 other Canadians, were chosen to carry the Olympic Torch on Canada Day as part of the the Olympic Torch Relay as part of the 1996 Olympics In Atlanta Georgia. The actual torch relay took place outside of Montgomery Alabama.
I carried the Torch which by itself was an "event of a lifetime" but what touched me the most was the following....
Following the torch relay we were invited to go to the Church were Martin Luther King was the Pastor. In the basement of this Church there is a mural on the wall outlining the key events in the struggle for racial equity starting with the bus trip by Elias Pitts in 1955. We then had a speech by the Deacon who recruited Martin Luther King from Altlanta to be their Pastor.
Just to picture the geography of Montomery back then. We had his Church on a hill and then there was a downhill where there were slave actions and then an uphill to the State Capitol Building.
Times in some sense have certainly changed since then but in other ways things haven't changed much.
I am sorely tempted to continue wirh a political dicsussion but will leave it here.
All I will ask is for people here, irrespective of age or experience, but to think about the current political environment in Canada and the US and reflect on whether we are headed in the right direction.
Sorry for the OT.
