Interesting Discussion
I have some retired army generals both in Canada and in the US that I have kept contact with over the years. They provide an interesting perspective on world affairs and also have the ability to cut through the BSheet and provide insight that you don't nirmally get from the popular press.
Yesterday I had a lengthy conversation with one of them about The Ukraine and thought I would share with you the highlights.
1....Putin does not have the ability to push a button hinself and start a nuclear war. He can issue a command to the military to engage nuclear armaments. It is highly unlikely that the top Russian generals would heed such a request. If they were to do so, within minutes there would be a retalitory nuclear attack targetting numerous strategic Russian sites including the Kremlin and Putin himself.
2...with Point 1 in mind, NATO should establish humanitarian zones for the Ukrainians to enforce the deal about safe passage out of Ukraine for Ukrainians. This would entail NATO aircraft patrolling the skies in these areas and in particular the Western Ukraine. These flights would not be offensive in nature but provide humanitarian assistance. The advantage of this is that it would provide control of the airspace over The Ukraine.
3....the US should engage its AWACS (specialized aircraft which can intercept opposition communication traffic and monitor military activity) in eastern Europe and over the Black Sea to get real time information on what is going on, provide advance notice to the Ukrainians of attacks from the Russians so they can intercept more missles etc coming from Russia and Belarus.
4...poking the Russian bear only makes the bear angry. Historically the way to deal with the bear is through force and they will back off. Today's politcians in NA and Europe are too scared to do the right thing and are making the situation worse....they are giving Putin a blank cheque to do whatever he wants.

History repeats because people are forgetful and/or too busy with modern life.
