The Caisse and other institutions continue to bail

SU continued to swallow up a good chunk of the selling via its NCIB.

The Caisse sold just under 12 million shares to hold 3.8 million at the end of March.  I expect they are out now.

Three American funds (Dox 13mm, Artisan 9mm, and FIL 7mm) collectively sold another 29mm

Institutional holdings dropped by 36 million shares during Q1

ACTIVE POSITIONS HOLDERS SHARES
Increased Positions 275 89,309,036
Decreased Positions 226 125,589,960

The 13F filings have to be submitted within 45 days of the end of each quarter are always interesting.  You can take a look here:

Are they bailing because of this ESG nonsense?
Comment by Obscure1 on May 18, 2022 9:30am
Yes. "Caisse de dpt et placement du Qubec says it will divest all of its oil investments by next year as part of the pension plan's plan to help combat climate change by cutting its carbon footprint in half by 2030. The province's public pension fund unveiled its climate change strategy on Tuesday.Sept 28, 2021" A number of American funds also indicated last year that ...more

Hahahah I love it, first they spend a billion on bailing out Bombardier, and now they lose money by ditching suncor. Poetic justice
Comment by divestor on May 18, 2022 5:53pm
Actually, I think that they did very well with their investment in Bombardier. They took them to the cleaners IMO. Minimum 15% compounded annual return I believe. I think they screwed them very well!
Comment by NPCexe on May 18, 2022 6:45pm
Not sure how that's possible given their stock went under a dollar, as well as the fact that they own 2.5 billion of Alstom when it was trading at 44 a share and it's now 23 lol

You want to have good results, look at the CDPQ and do the opposite.
Comment by Experienced on May 19, 2022 10:40am
I find all this very interesting. Back in the day before I retired when I was still in the investment business, I recall being part of a meeting with the manager of one of the so-called Ethical Funds.  This class of funds pitched the concept that they would only invest in companies that were socially responsible and hence they didn't invest in such things as tobacco companies. Prior to ...more

Experience: You have just simply defined what Elliott is trying to accomplish witg their 3% holdings of SU.
Comment by RagingBull3 on May 20, 2022 8:08am
That's probably just BS, Experienced.   MONEY is the reason fund managers invest where they do.    When I say Money, that does not necessarily mean money for the fund, it could also mean money for themselves maybe or "perks".   It's rare for SHAREHOLDERS to "control" what company CEOs do.   Even to vote, shareholders can only ...more
