Japan TAKING The AMMONIA FUEL As A SERIOUS CONTENDER

- Interesting in that the Japanese want to BURN  AMMONIA along with COAL to FIRE ELECTRIC GENERATING PLANTS

Japanese firms to build ammonia-fuelled ammonia carrier

Five Japanese firms — including shipping companies, shipbuilders and engine developers — will collaborate to build an ammonia-fuelled ammonia carrier, targeting commissioning in 2026.

Japanese shipping firm Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line), shipbuilder Nihon Shipyard, Japanese classification society Class NK, engine developer Japan Engine (J-ENG) and IHI Power System have signed an agreement to work together to develop an ammonia-fuelled medium gas carrier (AFMGC). The 40,000m³ ammonia carrier is scheduled to start commercial operations in November 2026.

There are three challenges in developing an AFMGC — ammonia's high flammability and high toxicity, as well as the production of greenhouse gas nitrous oxide during ammonia combustion, IHI said. The five firms designed a prototype ship that addressed these issues and obtained an in-principle approval (AiP) in September 2022. Their development has reached a level that is sufficient for social implementation, and so they have decided to move to the final step, IHI added.

Japan expects ammonia demand as a fuel to increase to 3mn t/yr by 2030 and to 30mn t/yr by 2050. Japan has set a goal of a 20pc ammonia co-firing rate at domestic coal-fired power generation plants by 2030, and above 50pc by 2050 to achieve the country's 2050 decarbonisation goal.

- the Japanese BELIEVE that AMMONIA is a BETTER and CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE than HYDROGEN to CO-FUEL to FEED into the ELECTRIC GENERATING PLANTS - so we have COMPETING VISIONS: NATURAL GAS + HYDROGEN COAL + AMMONIA z173

i would take ammonia ICE over EV anyday. Ammonia could complement diesel to reduce carbon soot, way cheaper than keep buying DEF. i use drive a propane powered old beater before and it was problem free, used engine oil color is like golden brown color. Can be honey color if one started out with a new ICE car. NH3 conversion  would be even cleaner and no need to buy a new car.  ...more
