What Can the Union Do?Someone asked what the union can to do people who cross the line..
I quote the CIRB.
"the CIRB recognizes that the union has vital interests in ensuring that its members respect picket lines and that the union’s ability to fine or expel strikebreakers must be upheld. There is considerable jurisprudence with respect to the union’s right to fairly discipline members who betray their fellow members and who work against the objectives of the union. It is unfair labour practice for the employer to pay fines on behalf of strikebreakers or to insist upon a ‘no reprisals’ clause during negotiations if it bars the parties from getting an agreement. As per the Canada Labour Code, disciplinary matters may still be dealt with and taken forward by the employer and the union may seek to have discipline against members upheld as well.
Fines can range in severity and may be well over your gross earnings for the duration of the dispute. Expulsion from the union is only one of the many penalties available to the local trial boards. Members should be aware that there are also certain circumstances whereby the union may ask for the dismissal of an employee."
