RE: Firing from the union...OK...here is how it works.
1. Scabs are identified and a sworn statement by 2 members is written.
2. Charges are filed against the scab by the local.
3. Scab is notified of the charges and given a tribunal date.
4. Tribunal will either find scab "guilty" or "not guilty".
5. There is an appeal process against the verdict.
6. If "guilty" then a fine is levied.
7. Scab is given opportunity to pay fine.
8. Unpaid fines are turned over to collection agency.
9. Collection agency will then attempt to collect fines.
10. Credit agencies are advised of the fines.
So..basically, the union does not try to collect the fines...once the scab does not pay, it goes straight to collection. So, perhaps you won't pay, but not everyone likes or can afford a negative credit rating and judgements. Now the interesting thing is that the legal precedence has been set in Alberta (scab heaven) several years ago. The very legal system that has protected the scabs via injunctions, will now be used against them for crossing a legal picket line.
