Dividend capture algo

Take a look at the 20 year chart. See the volume spikes that started after the cv19 crash? Some entity (or entities) have latched on to a form of profitable trade around the dividend ex-dates. I've seen it on multiple high-yielding stocks. What does this entity (algo?) see now that is different from the last 20 years? It was not there back iin the period of rising rates before the 2008 market crash. In fact, it was not there (at least not nearly to this extent) in the last 20 years period. Why does it persist to this day? What will make it stop?
